There are now a number of publications that are helpful in supporting assessment for learning in the classroom. The following provide a useful digest of the research on formative assessment and suggestions on how it might be implemented in the classroom. They also have substantial reference lists which tutors and student teachers will find valuable.

• Testing, motivation and learning was produced in 2002 by the Assessment Reform Group supported by the Nuffield foundation, published by University of Cambridge Faculty of Education
• The QCA Assessment for learning site has a very good section on questioning.
• Learning how to learn tracks the findings of an ESRC-funded research project and includes workshops designed to be run by schools but which are equally applicable to PGCE courses
• 'A Language in Common: Assessing English as an Additional Language' provides the 'Extended Scales' for speaking and listening, reading and writing for EAL students working below National Curriculum level 1
