English for Pupils With Diverse Backgrounds

Acknowledgements

“Taking gently is not stealing.” (Proverb, northern Ghana)

This is by way of an acknowledgement that most of the ideas you will find here have been lifted from other people. My ‘gentleness’ I hope lies in stating this at the outset. Let me immediately acknowledge, then, my debt to my erstwhile colleagues on the NATE multicultural Committee (1999- 2004): Merle Chalon, Carol Fox, Joan Goody, Sibani Raychaudhuri, Philip Yearwood and Basman Zora. I learned a great deal from them and have drawn freely on their ideas. In particular, the key principles are taken from Providing a Voice, an outline of key issues in multicultural education that we wrote in 2003.
