Drama at Key Stages 1 and 2

The Diversity of Drama Practice

A continuum of drama practice

The brainstorm of personal experiences and observed classroom practices could be recorded on a formal /informal continuum created as a large banner across the room. Each student teacher can record one of the ideas previously listed on this continuum, with the help of strips of paper and blu-tack. These can be easily repositioned following discussion of the formality/informality cline of drama. Additionally, an example of such a continuum could be shown.

The Diversity of Drama Practice - A continuum of drama practice

This should help the student teachers appreciate the diverse practices represented within the continuum and prepare the ground to discuss the core threads running through these activities such as imaginative involvement, the act of pretend, acceptance of an 'as if' world alongside awareness of a real one and exploring the fantasy/reality divide and the connections between the imaginary world of drama and the real world of lived experience.
