Using ICT for reflection – Ethical considerations of using ICT for recording

It is clearly essential that students are aware of the ethical considerations involved in the recording of images. Guidance on school placements makes explicit the need to check and observe the school policy on taking and using images of children. Whatever the policy of the school, we stress the importance of

  • gaining children’s consent for any recording to be made
  • considering the impact of the presence of recording equipment on the children involved
  • taking care over what happens to any recording or images after it has fulfilled its immediate purpose

Issues of ownership and power are also raised in relation to the use of ICT for recording. It is important for students to be clear about their focus and the purpose of ICT and ensure that, where appropriate, they enable children to take responsibility for recording. This may mean having to stand back whilst children make decisions which conflict with the student’s own view of the final product.
