Teaching Literature at KS 1-2

There are some very good resources and texts available that address the teaching of literature at KS1 and KS2. References to this material have been included in the online activities and where appropriate in the critical commentary. In addition a selected bibliography is provided as a starting point for further reading. The commentary does not attempt to replicate work that is produced elsewhere or detail approaches that have been outlined in other training materials such as the NLS training. The intention here is to provide a framework for new tutors that will assist them in helping trainees develop a critical purchase on the teaching of literature. This module offers some guidance as to how existing materials might be approached and key questions for discussion are suggested.

This critical guide is organised under the same headings as the online training materials. It is divided into four sections:

  • Values and judgements
  • Reading and responding
  • Range and aspects of literature
  • Keeping up-to-date

Each section has a short critical commentary addressing some of the important issues that arise from the online activities. Suggested further reading is given at the end of each section.
