2. Textual Diversity
The diversity of media text types is growing with the advent of digital cultures. This raises questions one the one hand about the extent to which generic approaches to the media based on the kind of conceptual framework outlined in Section 2 can deal with such diverse media; and on the other hand, about how possible it is in practical terms to encompass this breadth in the school curriculum and manage to sustain such a broad experience year on year throughout the secondary phase.

Should print media be part of media education? Are broadsheet newspapers, for instance, genuinely popular texts?

Should popular literature such as fantasy novels, sci fi, romance and other genre fiction, be part of a media curriculum?

How do we handle the increasing convergence between different media, and the transformations of narratives across media? How do we study the Lord of the Rings, which is book, film, animation, and computer game?

What are the dangers and advantages of trying to cover too many text types? Conversely, what are the dangers and advantages of focusing more narrowly, say on the moving image?
