Language Study Post-16

1. Course Content: What Student Teachers Must Be Able To Do

Although now superseded, the DfEE Circular 4/98 Teaching: High Status, High Standards: Requirements for Courses of Initial Teacher Training, provides a very helpful summary:

In order to teach A-level English Language effectively, student teachers must demonstrate that they:

  1. have the breadth and depth of knowledge, understanding and skills needed to apply a range of linguistic frameworks to a wide variety of texts from both the past and present;
  2. are able to investigate their own and others’ speech and writing and respond critically and perceptively to the different varieties of English they hear and read;
  3. are able to select and use the linguistic framework most appropriate for investigation and research into language uses and issues (DfEE 1998, p.101)

In terms of the revised Professional Standards for QTS implemented from September 2007, student teachers should have the opportunity within this area of study to address the following Standards:

Personal professional development

Q7(a)  Q10  Q11  Q14  Q22  Q24  Q25  Q26(a) Q27 Q28  Q29 Q32
