Poetry in the Primary National Strategy
Creating Poetry
- enjoy making up funny sentences and playing with words (Reception level)
- invent new similes and experiment with word play (Yr 3)
- use language playfully to exaggerate or pretend (Yr 4)
- invent nonsense words (Yr 5)
- create surreal, surprising, amusing and inventive poetry (Yr 6)
Performing Poetry (from R > Yr 6 there is emphasis on progression with use of voice & presentation)
- Joining in
- Copying actions
- Performing in unison, individually or chorally
- Varying volume, pace and use appropriate expression when performing
Reading Poetry
- Subject matter and theme
- Language use and style
- Pattern (and puzzle in R level)
- Yr 6 Revision: (2 wks reading poetry) ‘Children practise reading poetry texts and answering questions about them’
