Poetry in the Primary National Strategy

Creating Poetry

  • enjoy making up funny sentences and playing with words (Reception level)
  • invent new similes and experiment with word play (Yr 3)
  • use language playfully to exaggerate or pretend (Yr 4)
  • invent nonsense words (Yr 5)
  • create surreal, surprising, amusing and inventive poetry (Yr 6)

Performing Poetry (from R > Yr 6 there is emphasis on progression with use of voice & presentation)
  • Joining in
  • Copying actions
  • Performing in unison, individually or chorally
  • Varying volume, pace and use appropriate expression when performing

Reading Poetry
  • Subject matter and theme
  • Language use and style
  • Pattern (and puzzle in R level)
  • Yr 6 Revision: (2 wks reading poetry) ‘Children practise reading poetry texts and answering questions about them’
