Teaching Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat
Reading of the story and first impressions

  • Listen carefully to the reading of the story, following closely in your own copy. Did anything surprise you in the plot? How exactly does Poe achieve a sense of suspense and horror, if indeed he does?
  • Pairs / small groups: go over the text again, considering the questions above. Note down words and phrases which are difficult to understand, thinking of modern English equivalents for some of these as an aid to linguistic understanding and interpretation.
