The teaching of myths: planning a scheme of work The National Curriculum and the Framework for secondary English
After this initial work on the underlying rationale for a SOW, student teachers can be asked to address the National Curriculum Programmes of Study and/or Framework for secondary English. This is a difficult area and it can be a struggle to hit the right 'note' in terms of how much and in what ways the student teachers use the curriculum documents. Different schools place different emphases on tying lessons and SOWs to the different parts of the documents and student teachers feel they have to 'fit in' with the departments where they work. Whatever the departmental policy, it is helpful and sensible to 'limit' this part of the planning to a 'main focus' – for the key concepts, processes, range and content of the National Curriculum and the objectives of the Framework.
